Before You Visit

Everything you need to know before you arrive in Santa Teresa.

Best Time to Visit

December to April is dry season — warm, sunny days with calm seas. May to November brings lusher jungle and fewer crowds, with occasional afternoon showers.

What to Expect

Santa Teresa is a small surf town — think unpaved side streets, ATVs instead of taxis, and no shopping malls. Restaurants fill up fast; reservations are recommended for dinner. Cash is king at local sodas and markets. Expect warm temperatures year-round (26–32 °C), strong sun, and wildlife everywhere — monkeys, macaws, and iguanas are daily visitors. Pack light, bring reef-safe sunscreen, and leave your heels at home.

Getting Here

Santa Teresa sits on the remote edge of the Nicoya Peninsula — getting here usually requires a mix of air and land (or ferry) travel.

1. Fastest: By Air

Fly into San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR), then take a 25-minute domestic flight to Cóbano Airport (ACO) via Sansa Airlines or Costa Rican Green Airways. Casa Roca is a 20–25 min taxi ride from the airstrip.

⚠️ Domestic flights are daylight-only. If your international flight arrives in the evening, overnight near the airport and fly out the next morning.

2. Scenic: Car or Shuttle from San José

Rent a 4×4 or book a shuttle (Interbus / Tropical Tours) — ~5–6 hours including a ferry.

  • Puntarenas: Take Route 27 west ~1.5 hrs to the port.
  • Ferry: Puntarenas–Paquera, 70-min cruise. Book vehicle tickets online in advance.
  • Santa Teresa: From Paquera through Cóbano → Playa Carmen → turn right toward Calle Buenos Aires.

3. Direct Drive from Liberia (LIR)

No ferry needed — 3.5 to 5 hours by car or shuttle heading south through Nandayure, Paquera, and Cóbano.

Avoid coastal "shortcut" routes — they often involve unpredictable river crossings.
💡 Main highways into Santa Teresa are fully paved but for local roads 4x4 is preferred

Beach Access

Casa Roca sits on Calle Buenos Aires, the main artery connecting the villa to the heart of Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen — restaurants, surf shops, supermarkets, and the beach are all along this one road.

By ATV or car: ~5 minutes to the Playa Carmen crossroads. The quickest way to hop between spots, grab groceries, or catch a sunset.
On foot: ~20 minutes each way into town, ~40 minutes for the round trip. The road has a gentle slope — many guests turn the walk into a daily workout, heading out in the morning and back before breakfast.
Exercise route: The uphill return to Casa Roca is popular with guests who want a casual workout without a gym. Throw in a coffee stop on the way down and it becomes the perfect morning ritual.

Activities

Santa Teresa is the reason we chose this place. Here's what's outside your door.

Surfing

Consistent beach breaks suit all levels year-round. Several surf schools and board rentals are a short walk away. Dawn patrol is unmissable.

Dining

From fresh ceviche at beachside sodas to inventive cuisine at Koji's, Zwart, and El Sabanero — the food scene here punches well above its size.

Yoga & Wellness

Santa Teresa is a global hub for yoga. Multiple studios offer daily classes, multi-day retreats, and massage. Awaken Yoga and Horizon are local favourites.

Wildlife

Spot howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, and sea turtles without leaving the area. The Montezuma waterfalls are a 20-minute drive and well worth the trip.

Day Trips

Explore Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, snorkel at Isla Tortuga, or wander the bohemian village of Montezuma — all within easy reach of Casa Roca.

Beach & Town

Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen stretch for miles. World-class surf breaks, tide pools, and dramatic sunsets make every day feel like a postcard.

Local Tips

Rent an ATV or quad bike to explore easily. Stock up on groceries in nearby Cobano (15 min). Cash (colones) is handy for smaller vendors and sodas.
